Harvest Monday Week 9

Welcome to another Harvest Monday (Tuesday here in Aus). The garden is looking quite bare as a week of hot weather virtually killed off what was left of our vegetables; just a few capsicums, eggplants and a squash are left.

This week all we have managed to harvest was 2 watermelons (2650 g) and 7 zucchini (972 g).

On a brighter note I finally filled in my vegetable spreadsheet which was created by a gardening friend and tweaked by a teacher friend. So I can now report the money saved by growing our own organic vegetables so far this year. All savings were calculated by using today’s prices for organic fruit and vegetables from an Adelaide market and are in AUD.

Of course, we probably would not have chosen to buy almost 20 kilograms of zucchini in two months and I haven’t included expenditure, even so it does make all the effort worthwhile when you look at the total amount saved!

Harvest Monday is hosted by Daphne on her blog Daphne’s Dandelions, have a look and see what other garden bloggers have been harvesting this past week.

About A Kailyard in Adelaide

A Kailyard in Adelaide! We are working hard to be domestically sustainable in the foothills of Adelaide. As we both work fulltime this is not an easy task, but we do our best growing much of our own produce in our yard and in our community garden plots. We reduce, recycle and reuse as much as possible and try hard to not consume mindlessly. We have 5000 l of rainwater, a 5 kw solar system, and use a green energy provider for all our excess needs. That is a lot of zucchini. Last year it was cucumbers for me. I so would not have bought 62 pounds of them over a 2 month period. That is a pound a day on average. Who eats that many cucumbers? Luckily I have plenty of people to give them away to when I just can’t take anymore.

I love keeping track even though it can be hard to remember to write it all down. Lots of squash there. I bet while you were dealing with how to use it you weren’t thinking about the money. HA~

  3. $181 worth of zucchini – that’s scary!!!
i don’t weigh my fruit and veg, but i did weigh a very large tomato recently and it was almost half a kilo. then i looked at the five buckets i’d just harvested and thought, holey moley… 🙂
