After many years of talking about it, we finally decided to join the Solar revolution and added our household to the 25% of dwellings that host solar power systems in Adelaide; a most impressive statistic.

Each photovoltaic panel weighs about 19.5kgs and there are 20 of them.

We decided on a 5kw system, given our energy requirements. We have also changed over to a 100% renewable provider so no more coal fired energy for this house! Amazingly, even with the cost of the system and installation we should only be paying a very small amount more each month for our energy. And it should only take 4-5 years to have paid itself off!

That said, we chose to install for Green Living reasons rather than monetary; however, if it eventually proves to be lucrative we shan’t complain.

Also nice to know is that we are helping to create work for fellow South Australians. According to The Australia Institute’s recent report into the Solar industry in Australia, 65% more jobs are in Solar than in the gas and coal industry.

We think they look great too!

About A Kailyard in Adelaide

A Kailyard in Adelaide! We are working hard to be domestically sustainable in the foothills of Adelaide. As we both work fulltime this is not an easy task, but we do our best growing much of our own produce in our yard and in our community garden plots. We reduce, recycle and reuse as much as possible and try hard to not consume mindlessly. We have 5000 l of rainwater, a 5 kw solar system, and use a green energy provider for all our excess needs. Rachel: Mother, partner, teacher, writer, reader, crafter, cook, gardener, artist. Jamie: Father, partner, lecturer, therapist, would-be-politician, gardener, photographer, music lover.
