Tent city!

It is only 9 am and already the temperature has hit 32 in my suburb, with an expected top of 42! The air is thick, the wind burns and the sun beats down relentlessly. It is impossible to do anything outside without breaking into a sweat. However, we are lucky; we can cool off in the pool and sit in the glorious comfort of ducted air-conditioning. The plants on the other hand cannot.

To make life more comfortable for the veggie garden we give everything a good soak early in the morning, the mulch helps to retain this water. And we have turned the backyard into a tent city. Where possible the beds are covered with shade cloth and sheets to hopefully keep the worst of the sun off the plants. It looks like a kids’ playground.

I hope the 21 year old forgives me for using her favourite Pocahontas sheets!

About A Kailyard in Adelaide

A Kailyard in Adelaide! We are working hard to be domestically sustainable in the foothills of Adelaide. As we both work fulltime this is not an easy task, but we do our best growing much of our own produce in our yard and in our community garden plots. We reduce, recycle and reuse as much as possible and try hard to not consume mindlessly. We have 5000 l of rainwater, a 5 kw solar system, and use a green energy provider for all our excess needs. Rachel: Mother, partner, teacher, writer, reader, crafter, cook, gardener, artist. Jamie: Father, partner, lecturer, therapist, would-be-politician, gardener, photographer, music lover.
